Christina Hendricks on Granting Wishes and All That Wonder Woman Talk
Published on September 14th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews. Comments Off

I Don’t Know How She Does It is about all the responsibilities that a modern-day working woman has to juggle, and nobody knows that sort of thing better than Christina Hendricks, who’s been busy promoting her co-starring roles in I Don’t Know How and Drive, which are both out this Friday. She’s also got plenty more on her plate since the fifth season of Mad Men just started shooting, and Hendricks segued to that immediately after finishing up a part in the comedy Struck by Lightning, which was scripted by Glee‘s Chris Colfer. Luckily, Vulture found some time to chat with Hendricks last night at the I Don’t Know How premiere, where she filled us in on her sweet Emmy plans.

The director of I Don’t Know How She Does It said that he cast you in this role because he knew you could bring a real warmth to it.
It’s certainly different from what I do most of the year, which is play Joan on Mad Men, and it’s a romantic comedy, and she’s the best friend, and it has this sense of humor throughout. And it was nice and refreshing to do modern day, so it was a no-brainer for me.

Did you have any idea this would come out the same weekend as Drive? They’re such different roles.
Completely different movies, completely different characters, yes. I had no idea. I finished Mad Men, and maybe within the month I finished Drive, and then a month went by, and then I did this. To be honest, the real reason I did Drive was because of Nicolas Winding Refn, the director. I had seen Bronson and I was floored by it, and I said, “I want to work with this guy. I don’t care what it is.” And this is a smaller role, but I just wanted to be part of what he was doing, and it’s an instrumental role, and I think it’s really different than anything else I’ve ever done, and an opportunity to work with Ryan [Gosling] … there were so many reasons to do it. And I love that I actually have these coming out on the same night, on the opposite end of the spectrum of movies, both enjoyable in completely different ways.

A lot of people are talking about the atmosphere and the music for Drive.
I know, isn’t it good? When we were shooting, Ryan would run bands by me: “Do you like this? Do you like this?” But I didn’t hear the full soundtrack until later, and then I immediately downloaded all the songs. Actually, I’ve just moved into a house, so it’s my unpacking music. Continue reading »

Christina Hendricks: I’m Too Busy for Children Right Now
Published on September 14th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews. Comments Off

After almost two years of marriage, Christina Hendricks is still learning it’s all right to ask her husband to run to the grocery store.

“My husband does so much to help me, and I do as much to help him as possible,” Hendricks, 36, told PEOPLE at the I Don’t Know How She Does It premiere Monday in New York. “If one day he’s off from work, he’ll help me to do something – and vice versa.”

Amid two busy careers, the actress and hubby Geoffrey Arend make it work by giving each other a little grace, Hendricks said during the Cinema Society-hosted after party at the Hudson Hotel.

In her new film, Hendricks plays a single working mom, but the actress says she’s not quite ready for a baby yet. “At least not any time soon,” she said. “I feel busy enough right now.”

But there’s always time in the Emmy-nominated Mad Men star’s home for a good meal.

Arend, 33, is “an amazing cook,” Hendricks said, so she’s trying to stop feeling guilty when he takes care of the groceries. “You don’t have to feel guilty about it. And sometimes, [he] really enjoys it! I think he’s surpassed me now in his culinary talents.”

“We’ve been doing a lot of traveling and different jobs and going back and forth,” she said. “I don’t freak myself out if something doesn’t happen.

Christina Hendricks: Variety says she could win the Supporting Actress Emmy this year…

Christina Hendricks“Mad Men” AMC

Why she might win: Hendricks‘ Joan has long been the bedrock of what happens at the firm, which is now the fledgling Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Hendricks coolly provides an insightful look at what’s its like to be boys’ mother hen and fantasy sex kitten — all at once.

Maybe not: The last season began more than a year ago and feels like a distant memory. In the interim, many headlines regarding the skein have centered at the bargaining table as opposed to the performances.

Christina Hendricks shares her beauty secrets and her campaign to help kids
Published on August 18th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Other Projects. Comments Off

Christina Hendricks, best known for her character Joan in the TV show Mad Men, has the porcelain skin, impeccable makeup, and phenomenal hair color that make you think, “I need to talk beauty with this woman.” I recently got this opportunity after meeting her (and seeing her incredible skin in person—it’s flawless) at a lunch kicking off the Latisse Wishes Challenge, for which she is the spokesperson. I asked the Emmy-nominated 36-year-old Prevention’s 5 DYA Questions. And it turns out, her secrets are actually just sticking to the basics: healthy facial skin care products and a great lipstick.

If we went back in time to visit you at age 10, what would you most likely be doing?
I always wanted to be an actress. I started doing community theater in my hometown when I was young, so that’s where you would have probably seen me back then – hanging around the theater!

What makes you feel youthful today?
Being passionate about whatever it is I’m working on makes me feel youthful. Being excited and dedicated.

What beauty product is always in your purse?
I like to bring attention to my lips because they are so expressive, so I always have lipstick. Specifically, Dolce and Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Cosmopolitan ($30; dolceandgabbanamakeup.com). It’s a vibrant coral color – perfect for spring and summer.

What’s your best tip for keeping your skin healthy and glowing?
I’m very fair, so I take special care of my skin by applying sunscreen daily. Not only on my face, but also on my arms and chest. It’s important to me have healthy, good-looking skin.

Who is your Defy Your Age icon?
Among many women I think of as defying their age, my icon is Sophia Loren. I believe she is among a group of women who are stunningly beautiful and defy the idea that youth equals beauty. Talent and strength of character, as well as external beauty, shine even brighter.

Tell us more about the Latisse Wishes Challenge.
This campaign was inspired by the tradition of blowing on an eyelash to make wishes come true. If you donate a minimum of $20 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation at latissewisheschallenge.com, Latisse will double your donation and you can receive a free Latisse trial certificate. Our goal this year is to raise $500,000 so a wish can be granted in every Make-A-Wish chapter across the country. I am really proud to be an ambassador for a brand that contributes to children.

What’s on Christina Hendricks’s Vanity Table?
Published on August 17th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews. Comments Off

If you consider her role as sassy femme fatale Joan Harris (nĂ©e Holloway) on AMC’s hit series Mad Men, it only makes sense that the gorgeous Christina Hendricks is a fan, and user, of Latisse. After all, thick, sexy lashes were beauty staples of the 60s. Think Marilyn Monroe, the icon to which Christina’s character is often compared. But her relationship with Latisse goes beyond voluptuous lashes: Christina is actually the campaign ambassador for the Latisse Wishes Challenge.

The fund-raiser, which benefits the Make-a-Wish Foundation, continues through November 30. Not only will Latisse double all donations up to $250,000, but the first 10,000 participants who donate a minimum of $20 will receive a Latisse free trial. What could be better than long lashes for a wonderful cause?

Christina has said, “I’ve always felt my lashes were short and thin, and in my profession I wear a lot of false lashes and makeup, which take a toll. So when Latisse became available, I was curious to learn more
Latisse is also a brand that contributes to children, and I couldn’t think of a better cause to support than the Make-a-Wish Foundation. When I was seven years old, I saw firsthand the difference a wish can make in the life of a child, when a girl in my class got her wish to meet Erik Estrada.” Being that the Make-a-Wish Foundation is 31 years old, both Christina Hendricks and the foundation have come a long way. What a perfect time to ask this fabulous actress our favorite question: “What’s on your Vanity Table?”

Christina Hendricks on “Mad Men,” Sixties sexism and Emmys
Published on August 17th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Mad Men,Multimedia. Comments Off

“I thought it was interesting to see some of Joan’s power be taken away,” revealed Christina Hendricks about her character’s arc on the fourth season of “Mad Men.” In a video chat with senior editors Rob Licuria and Chris Beachum, she explained, “These new guys come in and (do) not respect her or understand her position in the company. I feel she was threatened a lot this year and had a lot of challenges in that way.”

Hendricks has played Joan Harris (nee Holloway) on “Mad Men,” the reigning three-time Emmy champ for Best Drama Series, since its 2007 debut. As the office manager of the advertising agency, Joan is looked upon as second class by the men and that sexist attitude is the focus of Hendricks‘ episode submission, “The Summer Man.”

Explaining her choice, Hendrick said, “I thought there were some really intense scenes in that particular episode for Joan. Her being so threatened and so conflicted … reaching this boiling point. She never really just expodes; everything is very contained so that all of this fury that you have to control comes out in this fiery damaging way.”

Hendricks received her second consecutive bid as Best Drama Supporting Actress and is competing against last year’s winner Archie Panjabi (“The Good Wife”), Emmy champs Christine Baranski (“The Good Wife”) and Kelly Macdonald (“Boardwalk Empire”), and Emmy rookies Michelle Forbes (“The Killing”) and Margo Martindale (“Justified”).

As the fourth season of “Mad Men” ended, Joan’s husband Greg (Sam Page) had shipped off to be a medic in the Vietnam War, she found out that she was pregnant through an affair with her boss Roger Sterling (John Slattery), and she secretly decided not to have the abortion they arranged. Regarding the fifth season, which starts shooting this month after a longer-than-usual delay, Hendricks revealed, “It just seems like a natural progression actually for the the character, and it’s going to add some really rich dimensions.”

Emma Stone reveals her girl crush: Christina Hendricks
Published on July 8th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews. Comments Off

There is zero hesitation when Emma Stone is asked who her girl crush is.

Christina Hendricks,” says Stone in a new interview with The Advocate. “It’s a no-brainer. Everything about her does it for me. That’s my kind of woman.”

And we’d just like to be the first to say that they’d make a super-hot couple. Except that in real life Stone is dating “Amazing Spider-Man” co-star Andrew Garfield and she’s not giving up any details about her personal life.

Still, the article is well worth the read. Stone — star of “Easy A,” “Friends with Benefits,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Help” — talks about the roles to which she’s drawn.

“My ultimate goal is to continue doing movies with some sort of message that can make a change, like ‘Easy A‘ or ‘The Help‘,” says Stone. “Because that’s what good movies do for me: They teach me and bring injustices to my attention.”

Stone advises any men who want to dress as her for Halloween to go with a red wig — even though she’s not (like her crush Christina Hendricks) a natural red head.

She also answers the all-important question “Are you a tomboy or a girly girl in real life?”

“It depends on the day,” says Stone. “I’m a solid party mix of both.”

We’ll have some of that.

Christina Hendricks’ Six Secrets to Staying Healthy, Fit, and Sexily Confident
Published on July 6th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews. Comments Off

As a child growing up in Twin Falls, Idaho, Christina Hendricks knew of at least one four-letter “F” word that was off-limits. (No, not that one.)

Raised in an extremely supportive home, Hendricks knew not to utter the word “fail.” The actress, who most notably plays sassy, sexy secretary Joan Harris (nĂ©e Holloway) on AMC’s hit drama Mad Men, says that her parents instilled in her and her brother a fearless attitude and an open mind.

“My mom never thought there was anything we couldn’t do. If we wanted to do it, she’d say, ‘Well, let’s figure out how to do that,’ whether it was dance or theater,” Hendricks says. If an experience didn’t turn out as successfully as her kids hoped, Mama Hendricks would spin it as a lesson to learn from — instead of a failure to dwell on.

Hendricks, who has teamed up with the maker of the eyelash-lengthening drug Latisse to help raise donations for the Make-a-Wish Foundation through LatisseWishesChallenge.com, believes that her mom’s can-do spirit helped build her own red-carpet confidence today. And she wishes more women would adopt such an outlook in their own lives — and maybe even take a cue from the one and only Ms. Holloway.

“Joan is an inspirational character,” Hendricks says. “People are really supportive of her, I think, because she’s sort of a survivor. She gets knocked down and she gets right back up again.”

But lest you think Hendricks has it all figured out, she’s the first to admit her health and happiness are always works in progress. “I’m constantly trying to learn how to be healthier and take tips from people,” she says. “You have to remind yourself all the time.” Here’s some of the best advice she’s taken to heart:

  1. Exercise with a buddy. Although Hendricks says that she’s not a gym rat at heart, scheduling training sessions with her husband, actor Geoffrey Arend, provides good incentive. “We try to work out together because it makes it so much more fun — and it makes the time go by quickly,” she says. Christina Hendricks: “Lucky” August 2011
Published on June 28th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Gallery,Magazines Coverage. Comments Off

Christina Hendricks wears Donna Karan New York on the cover of Lucky magazine’s August 2011 issue, on newsstands Tuesday (July 5).

Here’s what the 36-year-old Mad Men star had to share:

On dressing her famous curves: “I have to be careful about my proportions and keep it simple. What works for me is structure and something that shows my waist.”

On her least favorite outfit: “It’s really hard to find a bathing suit if you have breasts. You either get smooshed down or there’s no support. My husband and I have sketched out designs.”

On her go-to designers when on the red carpet: “Vivienne Westwood for drama, L’Wren Scott for her perfect tailoring and body consciousness and Zac Posen for whimsy.”

On why she, a natural blonde, dyed her hair at 10: “I was obsessed with Anne of Green Gables, so I wanted red hair. My mom said, ‘I’ll throw a rinse on it.’”
