Christina Hendricks: I’m Anxious to Get ‘Mad Men’ Back on the Air

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks is ready to get back to work. After a long hiatus due to a dispute between AMC and the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, the Emmy-nominated actress is happy to report that the cast will be back on set next month.

Hendricks, 35, who plays office bombshell Joan Holloway, has kept busy while show negotiations took place behind the scenes. In addition to filming two new movies, I Don’t Know How She Does It with Sarah Jessica Parker, and Drive with Ryan Gosling and Carrie Mulligan, she’s also teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and LATISSE to encourage women to help raise $500,000 so a wish can be granted in every Make-A-Wish chapter across the country.

The actress talked to Parade.com about getting back to the Mad Men set, and how her own childhood wish came true.

Heading back to the 1960s for season five.
“Yes, we’re going to get back to filming next month. We don’t have an exact date, but we’re all very anxious and excited. I want to get the show back on the air because I know lots of people are waiting!”

She had no doubt that the series would get back on track.
“I always had faith that everything was going to go fine. [Series creator] Matt Weiner is an incredible producer and writer and creator of our show. He’s very passionate about it and really held firm to what he wanted and what was best for the show. There wouldn’t be a show without him, so I knew it was going to work out. It just took a little while.”

Will both Christina (whose character learned she was pregnant during the season four finale) and co-star January Jones be sporting baby bumps this season?
“That’s a good question! I don’t know what’s going to happen yet. I know the writers are in the room working away and I’m going to go in and try to get some hints, but generally we don’t know what’s going to happen until we get that first script. So that makes me really excited to find out because I don’t even know.”

She didn’t expect her sex appeal to be a focus of Mad Men.
“When we did the pilot, that was not something that we discussed as a trait for Joan. This is something that’s developed as a combination of the costuming on the show, the hair and makeup, my portrayal of the role, and Matt’s writing. It all kind of came together and that became much more of a focus later. It was just something the audience brought attention to.”

She wants the attention on her talent, not her famous figure.
“I just have so many other things that I’m excited about. I’m really passionate about my acting and my career and the movies I’ve been working on.”

Christina Hendricks on Playing With the Boys
Published on June 7th, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Mad Men. Comments Off

Christina Hendricks made a splash in the first episode of “Mad Men,” running the secretarial pool with a firm hand and a tight dress. Since then her character has been in and out of the ad world and in and out of bed with Roger Sterling (John Slattery), while Hendricks herself has won two SAG Awards as part of the show’s ensemble cast, and watched the show take home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series three years running.  She also landed Esquire’s 2010 Sexiest Woman in the World designation in a vote of the magazines female readers

It’s been quite a while since you finished shooting your last season …
Seven, eight months? I think we wrapped in September or October.

You’ve been busy since then, haven’t you?
I did a movie called “Detachment,” and then I did “Drive,” and then I did a movie with Sarah Jessica Parker called “I Don’t Know How She Does It.” And I did Stephen Sondheim‘s “Company” at Lincoln Center, which was fun.  So yeah, I’ve been keeping real busy.

When do you start back on “Mad Men?”
It should be less than a month, I would think. Our writers are back, so that’s a good sign. But I saw Matt Weiner last night, and there’s still no definite day.

A few months ago, there was talk that Weiner might not return, and that he was being pressured to cut costs by trimming the cast substantially. Were you worried that he wouldn’t be back?
This show couldn’t be made without Matt Weiner. He is the show. So I knew that something would be figured out. I knew it would be.

Do you have any idea what’s in store for Joan next season?
I have one little hint of what might happen, and I can’t share it. It might go away. Sometimes he’ll give me a hint and that will end up changing. And I never say what those things are, because they might show up in a different season. Continue reading »

Extra” recently spoke with sexy “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks and asked about the rumor the hit AMC show has been delayed because of budget disputes — including the possibility that several characters may be axed from the show.

“I really hope that is not the case,” Hendricks told “Extra” at the Vivienne Westwood store opening in Los Angeles. Hendricks is the face of Westwood’s newest venture, the “Get a Life” Palladium jewelry collection.

Season 5 has reportedly been delayed until 2012. Hendricks said, “I hope it all gets wrapped up quickly and we go back to work!”

A statement from AMC:

“AMC has officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate (Mad Men‘s production company). While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012.”

AMC, Lionsgate Close To Deal With Matt Weiner For ‘Mad Men’
Published on March 22nd, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Mad Men,News and Rumours. Comments Off

After months of negotiations over compensation (Weiner had been asking for a lot more than what he got under the a rich pact he inked with Mad Men producer Lionsgate TV and AMC 2 years ago), the sides are said to be finally (and slowly) nearing a deal. But with negotiations pushing into late March, Season 5 of Mad Men probably won’t be able to launch in the summer as the show normally does. The period drama usually premieres in late July. Two years ago, when Weiner didn’t close his deal until mid-January, the season premiere was pushed to August. It’s safe to say that the delay will be even bigger this year.

Christina Hendricks Hopes Fans Aren’t Left Waiting
Published on February 21st, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Drive,Mad Men,Other Projects. Comments Off

The situation with AMC’s Mad Men is a case where no news is not necessarily good news. Though everyone is proceeding under the assumption that the acclaimed drama will be back for a fifth season, a huge question mark — one shaped like a dollar sign — looms over the when, seeing as series creator Matthew Weiner has yet to renew his deal with studio Lionsgate, which in turn needs to negotiate a new pact with AMC.“I know that there’s a Season 5 and we generally go back [to work] around May, June…. We’re just waiting for the word on when,” says Christina Hendricks, who plays pneumatic office manager Joan Holloway. “I’m anxious to get back and see what happens with [Joan], and to work with all my friends.”

In fact, so much work needs to be done toward hammering out each of the two aforementioned deals that some fret Mad Men won’t be ready in time for its unusual summertime premiere. Hendricks, though, deems herself unqualified to broach that hot topic. “I’ve heard just as many rumors as anybody else about the scheduling,” she says. “It’s already a long wait in between seasons for the fans, so I hope they don’t have to wait any longer.”

Until Hendricks’ fans get their next Joanie fix, they can at least hear the actress voicing another fierce femme, ace reporter Lois Lane in the new All-Star Superman animated film arriving on DVD this Tuesday. Here’s what she shared with TVLine about assuming that iconic role:

TVLINE | Is your Lois plucky, strong-willed, hardheaded…?
Certainly! I think she has to be all of that, because that’s Lois Lane to me. If you’re going to play her, you must always remember those qualities about her. Continue reading »

Christina Hendricks Talks ‘All Star Superman,’ DC Heroines, And Joss Whedon’s ‘Avengers’
Published on February 21st, 2011 by Flo & Filed in Articles and Interviews,Mad Men,Other Projects. Add Comment (1)

Although her husband is a big fan, “Mad Men” actress Christina Hendricks was mostly a stranger to the world of comic books when she was approached to play one of the most iconic characters of all time for Warner Bros. I’m talking, of course, about Superman’s main squeeze, Lois Lane, who Hendricks voices in the latest animated feature from DC, “All-Star Superman.”However, the actress does have a connection to the Marvel Universe right now due to her friendship and past working relationship (on “Firefly”) with “The Avengers” director Joss Whedon.

At the recent world premiere of “All-Star Superman” in New York City’s Paley Center, I asked if she’d spoke to Whedon about a role in that film.

“I’ve seen him recently as he’s preparing for it and I don’t think there’s a role for me in this project,” Hendricks said. “But I hope to work with Joss in the future because he’s fantastic and really easy to work with and a friend. So not on this one…”

She trailed off after that statement, so maybe fans can keep hope alive to see her in Whedon’s next big project. After all, late last year she was rumored to be taking on another iconic role, that of Wonder Woman.

“As far as the Wonder Woman rumor goes,” she said, “that was started by I have no idea who, but it was a really nice compliment and no one’s approached me about playing that. But it’s a fun rumor to go around.” [Note: This interview took place before Adrianne Palicki had been cast in the role.]However, casting and voice director for “All-Star Superman,” Andrea Romano, thinks Hendricks could do great things with the character in the animated realm.
